Abstract
The objective of this retrospective clinical study was toevaluate and analyze the pregnancy rates according to the fertilization rates of oocytes in in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer(IVF-ET) program. In 748 cycles of IVF-ET performed using controlled ovarian hyperstimulation(COH) with GnRH agonist and gonadotropins at Seoul National University Hospital from January, 1994 to June, 1995, fertilization and pregnancy rates were compared in relation to age, protocol of COH, and clinical indications.
When patients were classified into 6 age groups, fertilization rates of the pregnant cycles were significantly higher than those of the nonpregnant cycles in all age groups except group with $gt;40 years in age. When patients were reclassified into 3 groups according to the fertilization rate, pregnancy rates were significantly higher in Group II(30%~60% of fetilization rate) and Group III($gt;60%) compared with Group I($lt;30%). Excluding patients with male factor infertility, pregnancy rate were also significantly higher in Group II and Group III compared with Group I. As expected, the lowest fertilization and pregnancy rates were observed in patients with male factor infertility compared with other causes of infertility.
These data suggest that more rapid evaluation and active treatment of infertility such as microassisted fertilization(MAF) should be provided in patients with old age, lower fertilization rates or male factor infertility.
